DFT2 - Day 2

This is one of the hardest days on the fast. We may be feeling deprived from your favorite foods. As you take this journey into voluntary deprivation, spend time in prayer for those who go without food because of poverty, illness, war, or violence. Lift up in prayer those who are living in hunger.

As I read this reflection question, written last week, it feels so trivial to be focused on missing my favorite food in the wake of such horrific devastation in Haiti. My father, who has visited several countries in Central and South America said his time in Haiti was life changing. The poverty there was among the worst that he had ever seen, and he's traveled to four continents in desperately poor conditions. Haiti is among the most devastated of countries already. I read a post from  from Joel Dreyfuss, a Haitian-American, that encouraged us in the United States to remember that even among the devastation, the people of Haiti are strong, full of perseverance, and rich in culture and heritage. Our Bishop Peggy Johnson today prayed that this will be a time when God will lift up Haiti to new heights, that as attention is paid and resources poured in, the country will be restored to greater levels than ever before.

Today, may our hunger pains be calls to prayer for the people of Haiti.
