On Holy Thursday, we spent the night "remembering" what Jesus has done for us, the Last Supper he called us to share, and the call, from Rev. Richie Nazario of Cristo Rey UMC, to lay down our lives for Jesus. We worshiped, our primarily Caucasian congregation, with Cristo Rey, a primarily Spanish-speaking congregation. It was wonderful! The service was almost entirely bilingual, the music integrated and powerful, and the preaching dynamic.
In many ways, we also "re-membered" the body of Christ. For too long we as Christians have separated ourselves by language spoken, incomes earned, places we live or work, cultures experienced. Holy Week in particular calls us to "remember" Jesus and his last days but also to "re-member" or put back together the people of Christ who have separated themselves in so many ways. Last night as we were singing in Spanish and English, I could feel the Spirit of Christ weaving in and among us, uniting us in powerful ways. It was just a beginning - the first stitch in a complex and beautiful tapestry that has yet to be woven - but what a beginning it was!
