Still, small voice

Thursday, Mike and I rode through the Pisgah National Forest and along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. It is a stunning ride, filled with amazing vistas, miles and miles of rolling ridge lines and amazing drops from mountain tops into deep valleys.

Along our way, we passed by this mountaintop. It is one of the only bare mountain outcrops along our way; the rest of the mountains are covered in trees.

Immediately upon seeing it, I was struck by the story of God and Elijah, as Elijah has fled from Jezebel's army, who is trying to kill him after he has shown up her prophets in a face off. He wanders around feeling pretty sorry for himself. After the Lord has fed him, sheltered him, and cared for him, he's still feeling down in the dumps. So God tells him to go and stand on the mountain and wait for God to pass by. We know what happens next: a great wind came; God not in the wind. A great earthquake; God not in the earthquake. A great fire; God not in the fire. A small, quiet whisper. There, there is God.

Where is the whisper of God now? I worry that I, and our society as a whole, spends too much time either seeking out God in the loud noises and big actions and misses God in the quiet. Or we fill our ears and our minds with too much: constant music, constant television, constant websites. And in between the "too much" we miss the "just enough" of God's small voice.

Where - and how - is God speaking to you today?
