Advent Daniel Fast - Day 10

A friend of mine has started a blog about her family experiment to eat for less than $100 each week. That's a pretty tall order! We were reading each other's blogs, and she replied that her new focus on healthy, inexpensive, locally-sourced eating had her thinking many of the same things we have been talking about: how when we are more attentive to our food choices for whatever reason and curb the excess we are accustomed to, we suddenly notice how full of "stuff" our lives are in other areas. Our homes, our cars, our extracurricular activities, our work - they all seem chock full of, on a deeper look, needless items.

During Advent, God gives us the opportunity to dig deeper, to use the small bits of light that shine in the darkness of the night to search our souls for ways we can economize, we can reduce, we can clear away all that keeps us from living fully centered on Jesus Christ. As you fast this week, work into your time of prayer the petition that God will cleanse your heart and mind of the clutter that blocks a full commitment to the life of Christ. It's not a quick and easy prayer or a simple fix. This type of intentional, focused prayer takes a lifetime to realize because each day, something new will come and try to take up residence in your soul - and it may be junk that needs to be purged.

My prayer for each of us today is that we can look around and see what needs to be shed from our lives so we can make more room for Christ this Advent season.
