UNBIDDEN AND BEYOND HUMAN CONTROL, the Spirit of God moves through history, giving visions to the prophets of old, drawing attention to injustice, and warning believers to return to the covenant with God. We cannot predict the coming of the Spirit or its mode or method of arrival. But we can learn to pay attention, to seek and listen for the gentle whisper or booming voice of the Holy Spirit’s presence.

Meeting the Messiah
Meeting the Messiah
I love this quote, especially in light of the experience of the Daniel Fast. Oliver's line "We cannot predict the coming of the Spirit or its mode or method of arrival" is so apt for this journey. When we begin the Fast, we may have specific expectations of what we will experience or what we will "get out of" the Fast. The first time I did the Fast, I wanted to see amazing, instant, spiritual transformation. That's not what happened. The first week was pretty miserable. But soon, day after day of being attentive to God and attentive to my food, I started to feel a gentle, subtle shift. My spirit was making a little more room for God to enter and God did, with great grace and love.
If you are feeling worn down or bored or challenged right now, keep at it! You are making a space for the Spirit to come, wildly, unpredictably, in a whisper or booming voice. Wait with expectation, like we do all Advent, for what God will do.
Blessings,
Wendy
